Bartókiana - Bartók Events
A WORLD OF CONTRASTS
October 17, 2005 - University of Calgary
The event befittingly entitled A World of Contrasts embodies
the range of repertoire, genre and art forms that transcended
the creative life of Hungary’s greatest composer. Ever
heard or seen a hurdy-gurdy? What about a zither, cobsa or
hitgardon? Come experience the sound of these historic
Hungarian folk instruments. While you’re at it
view traditional folk dancing, experience children’s
piano repertoire and more! The event includes a one-day
piano competition (junior, intermediate and senior levels)
on the 19th, and culminates on October 20th with a lecture
recital “On the Shaman’s Trail” presented
by Dr. Damjana Bratuž, Professor Emeritus, University
of Western Ontario. The three laureate winners of the
piano competition on October 19th will perform at the recital
on October 20th.
As a composer Béla Bartók (1881-1945) profoundly influenced 20th
Century classical music and awoke the public to the musical intimacies of peasant
folk culture. Calgarians are given this special opportunity to experience
and transcend the multiplicities that characterizes Bartók’s repertoire. In
true Bartók spirit, this event will appeal to all ages, students, academics,
lovers of folk & classical music, and devotees of ethnic culture. These
three events intend to bring musicians and friends of music closer to the world
and works of Béla Bartók.
