Abstract

In exploring the work of two contemporary and one ancient composer (Kaija Saariaho, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Hildegard of Bingen), this presentation follows three themes that concern

• their power of invention,
• the possession of a mind that “had consumed all impediments” which was Virginia Woolf’s  requirement for ”the mind of an artist,” and
• the conceptual foundation manifested in their art.
